ZOHAN SUCKS

June 30, 2008 · 1 Comment

Its been like so damn long since i last logged in to blog liao.
haha. but i realized i have to. i got my own fans reading my blog, so i cannot be so selfish, deprive people of their daily source of inspiration and boredom.

I went to meet baby after work,
then we went to watch zohan. We da-baoed mac into the cinema, which was a far cry from what we da-baoed in the last time: dim sum and pizza hut’s spicy drumlets. haha.
When the movie started, i was like, “oh okay.”
After eating mac, i was like, “whatttttt. (yonghong style. copyrighted. HAHA)”
And i seriously contemplated about walking out of the cinema, especially when i saw her damn sian diao face. It’s like a combination of wth-i-am-here-watching-this and -___- written all over her face. and i would say the same is for me.
really man. the show, i heard from others is damn funny and stuff (imagine hearing all these after watching get smart, a damn fantastic show, and pple actually say its funnier than get smart. h a h a very funny. try again)
but yeah. if u ask me, such shows right, esp one like this, is best watched online. (ignore Wall-E’s message about pirated movies. so lame)
or maybe not watch at all, waste of time.

and yeah, besides that, i learnt something today.
“die” and “promises” are two dangerous words. hahaha.
you see ah,
if u dont do what u promise, u will die.
if u die, u can’t fulfil ur promise(s).
So moral of the story: steer clear away from these two words unless u are really sure u can use them without inviting danger to yourself and others.

National service, National responsibilities

19 June 2008

There is a saying in my office: the job of the Military Medicine Institute is to prove that you don’t have what you say you have. It began as a joke, based on observations that we have made during our time in Basic Military Training. Unfortunately, it seems that the statement is truer by the day.

I told my colleagues the story of a recruit in my company in Pulau Tekong. He suffered from severe flat feet. The arches of his feet would collapse after running for too long, making him highly unsuitable as a frontline soldier.

He demonstrated that he had flat foot during his medical check-up. He even went to a private specialist to confirm his condition. But he was sent for PES A/B training. It took over a month before he was officially downgraded and posted out – in the interim, he was pulled out of training and spent his days sitting in the company office and running simple errands.

Fiction? I wish. It is merely just another case of irresponsibility.

The price we pay

Every time a recruit is declared ‘Out of Training/Course’ in BMT because of a pre-existing medical condition that could have been detected but was not, he would have to be sent for the next BMT recourse that caters to his actual PES status. All the money heretofore spent on him, from food to utility bills to ammunition, would effectively be wasted – and that money comes from taxpayers’ wallets.

Pre-enlistees, too, have to bear the cost of a medical misdiagnosis. My former company mate scrambled to have a private specialist to diagnose him with flat foot, after realizing that the doctors at the Central Manpower Base would send him for PES A/B BMT. Armed with this documentation, he proved to his superiors that he should be medically downgraded, and was declared OOT from the third day.

Had he not consulted his specialist, there is a very high chance that he would have suffered feet injuries before the MMI realized its mistake. But it is absurd that he had to pay a private specialist to perform a service that a military doctor could, and ought to, have done just as competently, and for free. Private specialists charge steep prices; should a pre-enlistee with a medical condition be unable to afford a specialist, and be wrongly classified during his preliminary medical check-up, he would be in for a spell of bad luck and trouble. And the SAF would then have to pay for his treatment.

Worse still is the effect on the recruits’ health. One of my colleagues has scoliosis, curvature of the spine, and was sent for PES C BMT. The simple act of carrying his military and civilian clothing and equipment to his bunk injured his spine, and he had to be excused from carrying heavy loads. It should have been a given, considering his back problem, but nothing in the SAF seems to exist unless it is officially documented in triplicate.

A few months later, he was ordered to wear a fully loaded Load Bearing Vest to the live-firing range for nearly the whole day, further aggravating his injury. He now has to perform personal physiotherapy every other hour, courtesy of several slipped discs, and can only sleep on a waterbed because regular ones would aggravate his condition. Here, the SAF has to spend time to process his injury report – his case stretches back to December 2007, and has yet to be resolved – and determine if he was eligible for compensation. A medical board is being convened to determine if he should be downgraded to PES E9L9, the lowest grading a serviceman may get before being discharged on medical grounds. The result: even more time and money spent to rectify something that could have been prevented.

Perhaps the most debilitating of all is the effect on the morale of affected servicemen. My colleague now bears a grudge against his former commanders, refusing to refer to them without using unprintable vulgarities. Every serviceman who had had to turn to a private specialist because the military doctors have failed in their job would lose his faith in the MMI, because of that failure, and would have judged it rightly. Left unchecked, the negative attitude that emerges from each lapse would extend to embrace the SAF in its death grip. Indeed, to the disaffected, ‘SAF’ is an acronym for four words. The first two is ’serve and’, and the last is ‘off’. I will leave you to speculate what ‘F’ means.

Should his ennui be entrenched by future incidents, the serviceman would lose any incentive to do his best while serving his National Service liability. The efficiency of his unit would then be compromised in the area he is currently responsible for, be it logistics or clerical work. From a macro perspective, compounding the negative effects of each disappointed soldier, the overall effectiveness of the SAF would be further compromised – and therefore, its ability to defend Singapore.

The price of every misdiagnosis and every act of negligence is in the currency of money, time, operational readiness, and blood. We, the people of Singapore, are the only people who can pay for it.

Duties and expectations

The military sees National Service through the paradigm of duty. The average citizen, however, sees it through the paradigm of compulsion. The SAF wants to instil a sense of loyalty in every serviceman, to have him understand that National Service is a duty imposed upon all male Singaporeans to provide for the common defence, because there are too few people to sustain an army of regular soldiers. But many Singaporeans simply see National Service as a mechanism that tears their sons, brothers, fathers, husbands and lovers away from them.

Neither side is wrong. But their perspectives are irreconcilable. The death of every serviceman attributed to a military lapse would heighten the tension between them, and eats away at the military’s core. The military, in turn, would want to play down the extent of any lapses, because it – and its political masters – have no desire to lose the public’s support, which was never significantly high to begin with. I would not be surprised if stories of cover-ups were to surface; after all, nobody, least of all a regular soldier, would want to lose face. Yet this is only a temporary solution at best. It does not at all resolve the situation.

What should be done is the recognition of responsibilities on both sides. The military must recognize that it is a public organization that is mostly staffed by people against their free will. This restriction of such a basic human right must be recompensed through a pledge of honour and professionalism, to develop each enlistee’s potential to the fullest.

In the event of a lapse, especially one so severe that it leads to death or injury, the SAF must spare no effort in investigating its cause and punishing the guilty, and it must be done as transparently as possible. The military must aim to minimise the cost of maintaining the SAF, especially the cost imposed by negligence and misdiagnoses. Nothing less will do, because the survival of the nation and the honour of the military rest on the SAF’s shoulders. It is the public’s duty to urge the government and the SAF to do so, to prevent bureaucratic inertia from suffocating the investigation, as it is the public that must bear the cost of military irresponsibility.

Recognising responsibilities

Civilians, in turn, ought to recognize that they must provide for and support the common defence. Pre-enlistees should realize that only they can defend their loved ones, because there are not and never will be enough regulars to do so for them. They should play their part by meeting the rigours of National Service – servicemen by doing their best, civilians by supporting them. The legal system assures us that anybody who chooses to renege on his national duty would be punished if caught. But it is education, public messages, and the attitude of the military towards servicemen that would influence what people truly think of National Service.

The ultimate objective of this exercise is to reduce the cost borne by the public caused by negligence and misdiagnoses. When the military recognises its responsibility and acts professionally, doctors would examine pre-enlistees more carefully, commanders would care more for their men, clerks would pay more attention to their work, and so on. The citizenry would support the military in its task, and take it to task when needed. This means less public money spent on recourses and resources, less time wasted for new postings, less blood spilt and hearts lost by trainees, and a lower chance that the SAF, should it be needed, would be found wanting.

In times of peace, sons bury their fathers. In times of war, fathers bury their sons.

Let us hope that it becomes so.

an article my dad shared with me through email.
oh and to those who still can’t figure out what SAF really stands for, it is an open secret already so i’ll share it here.
SAF = Serve And Fuck off
and maybe that’s why u hear those commanders keep using the F word so much in camps. We can’t blame them, they are just reminding us of what SAF stands for.
amazing.

The past week

June 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I realized that i’ve not been updating much and hence, i’m here to update.
lol.

I’ll start from last Wednesday ba.
I had dinner with baby and ju at sushi tei (the raffles city shopping centre one). The place queue damn long, we waited for about 45 mins before we finally got to eat sia.
Before that, baby had this craving for ha kau that had been going on for damn long liao. since the week before and so we decided to head to the food court to have some small bites.

The food at sushi tei was not bad la, just that abit ex. more ex than ichiban and sakae. lol.

Thursday:
Went gyming and swimming with weiliang and wenyuan.
It was quite fun sia.
especially the swimming part, cos we get to tan sia.
lol. before that day, i didn’t know that there was a sun-tanning deck at tampines swimming complex.
And weiliang brought this sun-tanning oil; the type that u apply liao then skin shiny shiny one.
haha. and the sun was quite meng so we managed to get tanned a bit.
and then we swam a few laps in the pool and headed for lunch liao.
had lunch with jasmine at cafe cartel at TM cos weiliang insisted that it’s damn cheap cos of the student meal thing.
The lunch was followed by haagen dazs ice-cream at TM.
(at this point, i realized that the gyming and swimming that we did earlier on were of no effect liao)
and weiliang, being the handsome him, was being ogled at by a group of ITE girls at haagen dazs.
and according to him, they were taking his photo.
but i insisted that they were taking wenyuan’s photo lor, cos wenyuan was sitting directly opposite them. haha.
At night I met my family for dinner at the Riverside JUMBO restaurant (Clarke Quay there)
it was to celebrate my, my mum’s and my ah gong’s bday (all fall in june)
We managed to get a room cos the set menu my mum ordered was above $400. (or is it $450)

the menu

damn cool sia. the room got tv and a personal call button one.

we were the first to reach. my da jiu (big uncle) and my grandparents and my ah yi (my mum’s elder sis) and her family came later.
so the first dish was called the JUMBO “Petite Four” Appetizer. It contains 4 different appetizers.

they cheat us one lor. they give the green beans instead of the Nonya Duck Salad stated in the menu as seen above in FINE print but nvm, we are very nice people.

scallop with yam ring

chilled marinated jellyfish and crispy fried baby squid

the second dish was the fresh fungus in seafood broth (and it still looks like shark’s fin to me)

artistic hor.

Steamed “Soon Hock” Fish with soya sauce HONG KONG STYLE (sia)

At this dish, my cousin, jin lin had not arrived yet. she’s caught up with work i guess, so my ah gong go and use two bowls to cover up her seafood broth and look at her plate; it’s filled with food.
and when she arrived.. (note my ah gong took the bowl away and replace it with a plate. lol)

prawns and sotong balls (i’m lazy to type out the entire fanciful names of the food liao)

the prawns deserve another picture cos they are too imba

i only ate the mushrooms so i will call this the mushroom with some green thing dish (the thing’s called broccoli i know)

the HIGHLIGHT:

and how can anyone eat chilli crab without MAN TOU!!

BURPPP.

the next dish is fried rice:

and then there was no other food liao =( (excluding the cake and the dessert)
haha and i found these pictures quite amusing.
me and jin lin are like in the middle of the table, separating the pple on the right from the left. LOL.

muacks ziyan. HAHA.

and i found this particular photo interesting. lol.
both my uncle’s and my ah gong’s head super shiny that night. haha.

the dessert: yam paste with gingko seeds

the cake (complimentary cake. WOO):

this is the result of me and jin lin playing with all the candles

(i will post the group family photo when jin lin send me the photos because canon FLASH photos really suck)

Friday:
Baby and I went over to yiboon’s house at night during their cellgroup because we were the surprise for the bday girl – grace :)
haha.
The surprise was simple: we just appear with the cake at yiboon’s house while they are singing a song. and even before we walked in the apartment, grace was already crying. haha.
and then, we were told to wear green cos they wanted to make grace felt out of place (cos yy or ys said that she never wears green colour-based clothes one) and true enough, she wasnt wearing green.
it was fun to be part of the surprise.
I don’t have much photos to show cos i still have to wait for them to post on their blog before i can kope. haha.
anyway, we then had fun chatting and eating.
and presenting to u the green team:

please dont ask cos i also dont know why my left hand’s placed as such.

Saturday:
woke up early at 6am plus to meet baby before going to meet the rest at bedok interchange.
why so early leh? cos we are going cycling at ubin with the cellgroup! :D
haha. she made breakfast for me somemore.
although its just two simple pieces of bread with nutella piak in the middle, it tasted damn nice sia.
haha.
and so we headed over to bedok interchange on foot and met the rest.
not long after, we are on the ferry to pulau ubin liao.
it’s my first time and her second time going to ubin so we felt quite excited. haha.
and it’s like 5 months ago since i ever took a ferry. (20th Feb was the last time)
There were many people there sia. many many.
and when we disembarked the ferry, kevin was sitting down there with a big signboard-like thing.
That’s another surprise for grace! haha. she was damn happy la can tell and so were we :)
The night before kevin faked a motorbike accident and caused grace to panick and rush out of yiboon’s house. it turned out to be another surprise.
haha baby immed. looked at me and told me not to try such surprises in future. LOL.

and so we got ourselves a double bike and off we went.
it got me quite a while to get used to cycling again, especially after i have not cycled for so long.
i felt damn noob when i first stepped on the pedal but lucky, baby’s safe and unscathed after the day ended :)
halfway thru, we decided to switch to single bike and cycle.
haha we stopped at several places to take photos but once again, i can’t post anything here cos the photos are not with me :(
and all that cycling has made me interested in cycling again. i suddenly feel like getting a bike sia and maybe i will really get one.
the day ended so fast sia. but we had fun nonetheless.
thanks everyone! and most importantly, thanks baby :)
haha.

Sunday:
MY MUM’s BDAY!
my brother got a slice of tiramisu cake from Coffee Bean on saturday.

and since my mum fell asleep last night at 12am, we can only give her the cake today.
we stood outside her toilet in the morning and surprised her with the cake.
happy birthday mum :)
we love you.

and then in the afternoon, we had dim sum lunch at Far East Square at a place called Zhou’s Kitchen.
guess what? baby had lunch with us too :D
haha. i can lunch with 2 girls i love so much. how lucky am i sia.
(ya. go ahead and puke if u want cos that’s not going to stop me from loving them. hahaha)
i picked her up at raffles mrt then we walked over to Far East Square to meet my family.
I didn’t really take any picture of the food and dim sum cos i figured out that it’s damn tiring to post so many food photos on my blog.
(i have already spent about 3 hours on this post. SERIOUS!)
but here’s some photos. haha.

this is called the “three-storey” (i think)
the first layer is the mushrooms, followed by the tofu and then the seaweed at the top. (i chose to ignore the green colour thing. haha)

some dessert with lime sorbet and jelly

guess the bill?
it hit $140 sia. i can’t believe that we spent almost half of that on dim sum. haha.
cos the set only cost $68+.
but well, we satisfied our tummies :D

and finally, here are some photos with humans in it.

mum with my am-chioing dad

Do-Re-Mi. HAHA.

the damn cute photo (quoted from ms ong. haha)

I realized that i’ve spent 3 consecutive days with ms ong :) and no, i’m not bored of her.
Instead, I wish i could spend even more time with her! haha.
and though sometimes she bullies me, but i still love her all the same :)

FINALLY.
i’ve finished blogging.
i spent 3++ hours sia. haha.
now it’s time to go to my ah ma house for dinner. EAT-FULL-FULL time is nearing.
haha.

Looking at your watch on the table, i realized how much i really miss you.

June 17, 2008 · 1 Comment

To those who didn’t know, my mc got extended again. (until 12th july)
this time it’s a 1 month extension because my ankle’s hurting damn badly and the doc said there may be some strain on the ligament.

sigh.
the army has lost an indispensable soldier due to an ankle fracture and (maybe) a ligament strain for 5 months. and who can they blame?
themselves only.
HAHA.

Nope, i’m not here to blog about my life again.
I’m just here to help publicize some things.

1.
Anyone interested in working and helping out during the F-1 Racing thing that is going to be held in singapore in september?
refer to this link:

2.
To those who do not have cable tv and wish to watch the euro 2008 or the nba finals, here’s web where u can view highlights from games that u want. Cos apparently youtube bans some videos of goals and highlights due to copyright infringements. nba still can watch from youtube but not euro 2008 (i think. i mean clear videos)
there’s other sports too.

Strike 2

From ASIAONE:

Thu, Jun 12, 2008
The Straits Times

RSAF pilot trainee collapses, dies during training in Brunei

A 20-YEAR-OLD trainee pilot with the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) collapsed during jungle orientation training in Brunei and died on Wednesday, said a statement from the Ministry of Defence on Thursday.

Regular serviceman, Officer Cadet (OCT) Lam Jia Hao Clifton (right) collapsed at about 5.45 pm and was given immediate first aid treatment by a doctor and a senior medic.

He was evacuated by helicopter at 6.32pm to Ripas Hospital and arrived 10 minutes later.

The doctor and senior medic continued to resuscitate OCT Lam en route to the hospital, said Mindef. He was pronounced dead at 7.20pm in the hospital.

Mindef is investigating the incident, which happened a day after an army recruit, also 20, collapsed and died on Pulau Tekong on Tuesday, barely five days into his national service.

Mr Andrew Cheah Wei Siong was then doing a 2 km training walk at the Basic Military Training Centre on the island, as part of an enhanced 15-week basic military training (BMT) meant for mildly obese recruits.

He fainted at the 1.2km mark at 8.35 am on Tuesday, after starting out at 8 am.

He was sent to the Singapore General Hospital by helicopter and was pronounced dead at 10.50 am.

wilson’s sms reminded me.
when i reached home yesterday morning(it was 12am u see), my mum told me the news that another guy has died from serving the nation.

strike 1,
strike 2,
strike 3? NS is out.

i was damn scared la.
for a moment.
cos my mum told me brunei.
then said something about airforce, pilot or what.
my first thought was sean la. seriously. damn worried for him.
phew.i hope he faster comes back, then i can crap with him again like how we did in j2 that time. miss those times man.
sean, i love u man. come back to me. HAHA.

anyway, this clifton guy he seems damn familiar to me.

sigh.
it’s sad to see people our age leaving the world like this.
so not worth it.

and i heard physical training’s been stopped for 3 days.
and it’s friday today! so does that mean that the 3 days end on sunday?
if it’s so, they very smart i must say.
clap clap.
